BODHOLDT SPEED TESTING
A real speed test needs cellular data a browser can't see.
Bodholdt Speed Testing runs in the iOS and Android apps so it can capture carrier, signal strength, cell tower, network generation, and roaming state on top of download, upload, and ping. That's what fills the coverage map and makes the carrier grades meaningful.
/// WHY AN APP
What the app collects that a browser can't
iOS + Android app APP ONLY
- Download, upload, ping, jitter, bufferbloat
- Carrier name (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.)
- Network generation (4G, LTE, 5G, 5G SA)
- Signal strength (RSRP, RSRQ, SINR)
- Cell tower identifier for coverage mapping
- Roaming state and dual-SIM detection
- Exact location (with your permission)
Any web browser CAN'T SEE
- No carrier name — the browser has no cellular API
- No signal strength or tower identifier
- No way to tell Wi-Fi from cellular reliably
- No network generation (4G vs 5G)
- No way to force cellular for the test
- No roaming or dual-SIM awareness
/// PRIVACY
Only cellular tests are saved
By design, the app only saves cellular tests. Wi-Fi results can be run for your own curiosity but are never submitted to the community dataset. That's why every row on the coverage map and every carrier grade represents real cellular conditions — not a mix of home Wi-Fi and cellular that would make comparisons meaningless. Visibility of your cellular results is controlled by a per-test toggle you can change at any time in Settings.
